A Hyphenate Life …
A word nerd who's wired into this crazy Web we've weaved
COPYWRITING
As a copywriter-songwriter-sometimes performer, I know a bit about a lot of things — which makes me a ringer for Trivial Pursuit and indispensable when called upon to write for a wide variety of verticals throughout my 14-year career.
I’ve created key messages for the arts, automotive, education, entertainment, environmental, events, food, government, manufacturing, mobile, online, self-help, senior living, sports and technology markets, and I’m eager to learn more.
I’m continually fascinated by character counts and how this texting-thumb world we live in has made us all more concise. We get in, say what we mean, then get out. When not restricted by word counts, I can use the extra space to my advantage, when it’s necessary for conveying detailed or complex messages.
CORPORATE LIFE
Having worked both as a freelance copywriter and as a full-timer in publishing and online content management teams, I speak SEO and play nicely with designers, project managers and code savants. Firms where I’ve enjoyed monthly birthday cake as a staffer include Manhattan Media, American Greetings Inc., Dada Entertainment, Manufacturer & Business Association, Rising Media Group, WJET-TV 24 and Fox Sports Ohio. Because of my journalism background, my research and editing skills are Ginsu-sharp.
SONGWRITING
If you’ve browsed this site, you already know that music is a big part of my life. So are sports. I live and die on every Michigan down come college football season, and the first two all-encompassing weeks of March Madness make me glad I’m a freelancer. I play rec softball, I spin, I Zumba. And my heart is firmly rooted in the theatre.
When my song “From You I Learned” won first prize in the ASCAP/Lilith Fair Songwriting Contest, I moved to New York City and earned a spot in the BMI Lehman Engel Musical Theatre Workshop (Advanced) as a lyricist. My lyrics have been performed in benefits and concerts throughout NYC as well as regionally, and one song I co-wrote during my time at BMI is bound for Broadway. Written with composer Barbara Anselmi, “Perfect” is part of the musical IT SHOULDA BEEN YOU, which recently enjoyed a sold-out world premiere at the George Street Playhouse in New Brunswick, N.J., for which David Hyde Pierce helmed a star-studded cast lead by Tyne Daly. The next production is slated for March 2012 at the Village Theatre in Issaquah, Wash.
I’ve also just released a demo of songs aimed at placement in film and TV. I launched a RocketHub campaign to raise funds to finish the CD, and raised even more than my goal!
